WHEREAS, The Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI) is the official student voice more than 15,000 students at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
WHEREAS, It is the mission of the ASI “to advocate for the student rights, render an official voice through which students’ opinions may be expressed and provide educational, social and cultural activities which enhance student life at California State University, Dominguez Hills.”
WHEREAS, There are an estimated 8,000 undocumented students enrolled in the CSU system.
WHEREAS, Assigned university staff alone are not enough to support undocumented students including California AB 540 through their time at CSUDH.
WHEREAS, Resources are limited or non-accessible for undocumented students at CSUDH, thus hindering student success.
WHEREAS, The lack of resources negatively influences attendance, persistence, and graduation rates of undocumented students.
WHEREAS, The U.S. Department of Education and California Governor Jerry Brown suggest that higher education institutions create open and welcoming environments for undocumented students.
WHEREAS, The Academic Senate of CSUDH has passed a resolution(*W-FAC-16-21) in support of undocumented students in the campus community
WHEREAS, CSUDH only has one coordinator in the Toro Dreamers Success Center.
WHEREAS, The CSUDH Toro Dreamers Success Center has both limited resources and hours of operation to adequately provide support services for undocumented students.
RESOLVED, That ASI advocates that CSUDH Administration consider allocating additional resources that would foster academic and personal support for undocumented students.
RESOLVED, The CSUDH ASI Board of Directors will add Undocumented Student Ally Training to their regular leadership development.
RESOLVED, That President Hagan formally and publicly sign a statement in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and undocumented immigrant students.
RESOLVED, That the CSUDH campus and the Toro Dreamers Success Center offer resources that provide emotional support and advising related to academics and financial aid; provide guidance for undocumented students when looking for job opportunities, internships and/or fellowships; and accessible information on immigration related forms, traveling abroad, and help with interpretation of laws; be it further.
RESOLVED, That President Hagan and the University Cabinet are encouraged to include the Toro Dreamers Success Center and dedicated support resources in the campus strategic and facilities master plan; be it further.
RESOLVED, That the university provide public updates detailing the progress that the campus is making on the recommendations for the Toro Dreamer Success Center; be it further.
RESOLVED, That CSUDH is urged to provide additional dedicated resources for students who identify as undocumented, AB 540 or a DREAM student, such as additional coordinators at the Toro Dreamers Success Center; be it further.
RESOLVED, That CSUDH provides resources to expand the Toro Dreamers Success Center hours of operation to also accommodate night and weekend students.
RESOLVED, That in the event the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is reversed, CSUDH will continue to stand by and support undocumented students through designated financial resources, which will allow previously qualified DACA recipients to continue uninterrupted schooling at CSUDH.
RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be distributed widely, and specifically to: The students of CSUDH; University President, Dr. Hagan; Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael E.
