Leadership Development

 ASI Board of Directors, Student-at-Large members and Student Employee receives regular, ongoing leadership training and development. These trainings and development are grounded in ASI’s core values of leadership/guidance, student growth and advocacy and then facilitated through the Social Change Model of Leadership.

 

ASI Core Value: Leadership/Guidance

 A student involved in the activities, programs and services of the Associated Students, Inc at CSUDH develops and demonstrates leadership and guidance in the following:

Assess and articulates accurately personal strengths and areas of improvement

  • Demonstrates effective planning and purposeful behavior to achieve personal and organization goals
  • Shows initiative in obtaining skills and knowledge necessary for position
  • Seeks out others with difference backgrounds/perspectives in decision making process

  • Encourage others to actively participate in understanding legislation and policies affecting students of CSUDH
  • Seeks out opportunities to advocate to local, state, and national level

 

Social Change Model of Leadership Development

ASI uses the Social Change Model of Leadership Development to train and guide its Student Leaders. The Social Change Model of Leadership Development was created by “The Working Ensemble” of professionals gathered by the Higher Education Research Institute. It was created specifically for the college undergraduate and published in 1996. Each level of values is tied to the other through reflection and feedback loops.

Values

Throughout the year, ASI Student Leaders receive the following trainings:

  • A week-long training in August to prepare for the academic year
  • Bi-weekly workshops based on the elements of the Social Change Model of Leadership
  • 360 leadership assessment
  • Ongoing one-on-one advising with professional staff
